Rent with confidence

Plain advice for tenants, students and families.

Avoiding rental scams

  • Never pay a deposit before viewing the property in person or by a live video call.
  • Pay to the landlord's or agent's registered business account or M-Pesa till, and keep the receipt.
  • Be wary of prices far below the area average or pressure to pay "today".
  • Use the "Report this listing" link if something feels wrong — we review every report.

Choosing a student hostel

  • Walk the route to campus at the time you'd normally travel.
  • Ask whether water, electricity and WiFi are included in the semester price.
  • Check the security: gate, guard, lighting and lockable rooms.
  • Get the house rules and refund policy in writing before you pay.

Before you sign a lease

  • Read the whole agreement, including notice period and deposit refund terms.
  • Photograph the property's condition on move-in day and share it with the landlord.
  • Confirm who pays for repairs, water and service charges.

Moving in

  • Book movers early at month-end — find approved ones in Local Businesses.
  • Change the locks or confirm all keys have been returned.
  • Register for electricity tokens and water in your name where possible.
